Was this the First Instagrammer?

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Was this the First Instagrammer?

My grandparents left their home town after World War II to settle in the Alps, run a Youth Hostel and start a great family of 8 kids.

They always taught us how to have fun in life and stand up for our values. My Grandma was the first “Instagrammer” — she took thousands pictures of clouds when she liked their shapes….with a real Instamatic! ~shared by @supermelu

My Nana, Nurse and Hero

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on My Nana, Nurse and Hero

I absolutely love this picture of my Nana. We found this photo of her as we sorted old family pictures recently with lots of family gathered.

My Nana was a Navy Nurse and ER Nurse after that. She was a hero of mine, and why I became a nurse too. ~shared by @degnacademy

Elizabeth “Libby” Wilhelm Woods. My grandmother. A peacemaker, globe trotter, family hub, polka-dot lover, redhead, back scratcher, snuggler, care giver, handbag collector, orange tic-tac sharer, Friday night dinner date, native Floridian, family historian, big sister, little sister, mother and my favorite person to have shared my childhood with.

She is our company’s namesake. She was brilliant. ~ shared by @eugeniawoods

Old Pictures Offer us a Front-Row Seat to Family History

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Old Pictures Offer us a Front-Row Seat to Family History

“Tell us a story from before we can remember.” ~ The Tree of Life
Thanks @jasonwattsphotography for inspiring this post.
My journey with family photos began with wedding photography. During a decade as a wedding photographer, I got a front-row seat to family history. And the photos I made were priceless for families who trusted me to document such an important milestone.

That’s why wedding photos are close to my heart. This one, in particular, is important to me and my husband, @andrewniesen.
This is his grandparents’ wedding. Gladys Ware Means and David B. Hilley were married June 11,1949 in South Carolina.
Their grandchildren called them “Gee” and “Boppa.” I never met Boppa; he died too young. Yet he lives on in photos, stories, and the entrepreneurial spirit of my husband, Andrew. Every time I see Andrew’s brain processing a new business idea, I feel like I’m seeing a bit of Boppa.
Family photos are more than images; they’re stories; they’re history. They tell us, WE WERE HERE. ~shared by @rachellacour

A Tony Curtis Look Alike in An Old Family Photo

This is my handsome Dad in Glasgow, Scotland in 1953. He told me this was his ‘Tony Curtis’ hair style. He was trendy at age 21 and at nearly 82 now, he’s still trendy! 🙂 ~shared by @topsycurl333

Civil War Era Home and Family History

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Civil War Era Home and Family History

Plaid skirts! Here are my grandma (on the right) and her sister on Knott’s Island, North Carolina in the mid-1940’s.

They lived in a Civil War era farm house, which was torn down before I was born.
They lived in this house with no electricity or running water; they had an outhouse. The small, isolated island didn’t get any power at all until the mid 1930’s. The kids rode a small bus across a causeway into Virginia to go to school.

I have managed to keep a few small pieces of furniture and an old mirror that date back to the old house. Not a day goes by that I don’t wish it was still standing so I could see it! ~shared by @elizabethandrus

An Icy Family Story

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on An Icy Family Story

ICE, ICE…! On this chilly winter day, here’s a story about a family who made ice their business. Stay warm out there, y’all. — This is my great grandfather A. Friedrich Ludwig standing in front of his ice plant in the 1930’s.
The modernization of the 1930’s saw the end of the natural lake cut ice business.
My great grandfather bought the Armour Meat Packing plant at 77 Brooklyn Street in Rockville, Connecticut and converted it into an ice manufacturing plant.

The plant was powered by a large electric motor that ran a Frick compressor. Ammonia was used as a cooling agent. A short time later, a huge Wolverine four cylinder Diesel engine was used as a power source, and the electric motor was converted into a generator so that my family could make it’s own electricity.
A three hundred foot well was drilled as a source for crystal clear water. With all these improvements, the plant could manufacture thirty tons of ice every twenty four hours. ~ shared by @ludwigdermaler

We Have the Same Face

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on We Have the Same Face

Poured myself a warm glass, and laid awake, I prayed the Lord my soul to take, I thought about you all day, how we have the same face I fell asleep so confused, parts of me remind me of you.

This is my grandmother, Linda Lee Rushing. She loved to design and make jewelry, play bingo and for many years was a season ticket holder to the Dodgers.
She took every chance to travel. And now she is remembered by her warm and giving heart, as well as her always happy, positive attitude. ~shared by @srirachels

Make Memories Worth Saving for Future Generations

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Make Memories Worth Saving for Future Generations

Riding in The Odyssey with my Dad. This must have been 1981, and I’m pretty sure I’m 7.
I learned to drive in this crazy vehicle; it was the best gift I ever received, despite the fact I could rarely pull start it myself.
My Dad used to take me to all the BLM land around Napa County. We’d spend hours blasting down old mining roads.
The Oddessy was such a fantastic vehicle, I felt totally indestructible! ~ shared by @claynewton

Get into some mischief this weekend, y’all. Make memories worth saving and sharing for future generations.
