My grandmother Sylvia Hubbard was born on November 20, 1919 in Ohio.

She married after graduating from high school and became the proud mother of my mom and uncle. Her husband passed away early in life and she persevered to successfully solo-parent and raise two wonderful human beings.

Professionally, she spent more than twenty years working for the IRS. During her time there, she received the Department of the Treasury’s highest honor: the Albert Gallatin Award for exemplary service.

Throughout her life, my grandma was also active in her church and community.

More than her personal or professional accolades, the most important thing to know about Sylvia Hubbard is that she lived a life devoted to service. She taught me that “beauty is seen, not heard.” She modeled that truth through her quiet, sweet spirit. She positively impacted every person whom she encountered on this planet. She showed me how to live a life filled with acts of service.

The most important lesson I learned from my grandmother is that our lives should truly represent our gifts; we should live and love according to our calling.

I was forever changed by my grandmother’s spirit and am committed to live a life filled with kindness and gratitude.
