I’ve been scanning old family photos and slides for several years now; this one stands out to me for obvious reasons. The less obvious reasons are subtle and special.

As a child of the 1960s, I remember all the local businesses being run by WWII vets, most still in good shape. This photo, from a decade earlier, really accentuates that to me.

I love the empty beer can beside one of my relatives. The most subtle sign of the war shows up if you look at my father, Charles Douglas Mulligan, who is the gentleman to the left of camera-wielding Aunt Golda. Notice his bandage, a forever symbol of an attack on his B-29 which left him with no hands.

I love the fact that the photo is so much a slice of life, yet unposed. ~shared by @mlmulligan1
