Sometimes Simple memories come flooding back when we discover old family pictures

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Sometimes Simple memories come flooding back when we discover old family pictures

Sometimes the simplest memories come flooding back when we discover old family photos.

While visiting home recently, I was able to go through old family photos. I discovered this photo from the early 1970s.

Here I am with my older siblings, pre-Christmas, all dressed in our jammie’s and waiting on Santa. Our parents were smart; we all have the same stocking stuffer – a slinky! There was no fighting that way.
I loved my childhood. I was the baby and grew up with these three. Joe is the oldest. I always thought he watched over me, just like he is in this old photo. Then there’s Patty and Laura.
Most of all, I love the way Joe is watching over me. We are all a year apart in age, lots of girly giggling and our big brother rolling his eyes.
I totally dropped my slinky but still have a huge smile on my face. Great memories. ~shared by @bgmbreckenridge

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love

Memory is a way of holding onto the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose. -Kevin Arnold

My Grandmother Gertrude is suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease. The nursing home were she lives recommended making a “Memory Book” for her.

The time period in which her mind typically lives is when she was a child. She speaks of her parents and siblings as if they are all still living when in fact, she’s the last one.

Her memory book is made up of photos of her as a little girl with her brothers and sisters. The photos above are of her parents, my great grandparents whom I never got to meet.

As her memory fades every day and she forgets who I am and who my daughters are from one visit to the next, I still find it comforting when she looks through her photos and those photographs have the power of bringing her memories back. I am so glad we have them. ~shared by @danilee

A Love Letter to my Grandmother

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on A Love Letter to my Grandmother

Dear Grammy,

I just wanted to express to you how much you mean and how much you have influenced my life.

You have always been a cheerful giver, always selfless. No matter what, you always had something to give us grandkids. Whether it was a piece of candy or some amount of money (a dollar bill or a $25 check), it meant so much.

I always loved receiving your letters and cards in the mail, especially when I was away at college. Whenever I was homesick, I would read them and feel like you were with me. Whether it was your sweet words of encouragement, a Bible verse, or a silly poem about how much you loved me, your letters meant so much to me. I cherish those words and all the time we spent together.

Your prayers, your songs and your overflowing love lifted me up and helped me become the woman I am today. I am proud to be your granddaughter. I love you so much Grammy.

Your Granddaughter,

Brianna

I wrote this letter to my Grammy, Phyllis Moore, before she died. I was able to say my goodbyes and read it to her in person.

She died at peace, surrounded by her loving family, on Sunday February 23, 2014. She was born in East Boston on October 4, 1930. She was one of six children. Her parents divorced when they were young, and her mother raised them alone during the Great Depression. She taught them love, faith in God, great food, and music. ~shared by @briannacox

There’s a world of wisdom in our own family photos and the stories they tell

There’s a world of wisdom in our personal stories. Your life is a legacy, a gift that only you can give. -Dolly Berthelot

Wishing the happiest of birthdays to the lovely lady who taught me how to both knit and crochet, drink coffee with class (and with the proper amount of cream), and barter with garage-sale hosts.

She fostered my love for Alan Jackson and encouraged me to be myself.

I owe many things, including my thrift-store prowess, knack for collecting, and unflinching love for family, to my Grandma Vivian.

This photo with her parents was taken on her 16th birthday. ~shared by @melislynn

Old Photos are artifacts of our experiences and existence, memories made visible

Photos are artifacts of our experiences and existence, memories made visible.

This is my beautiful grandmother holding my uncle, photographed by my grandfather in the late 1940s on Kodachrome with his trusty Leica camera.

My grandparents are both 90 years old now, and are high school sweethearts.
They were born, raised, and still reside in Cincinnati, Ohio. My grandfather was in the Navy and then worked as a banker, but always loved taking pictures. He has been a camera enthusiast his entire life but never pursued it professionally.
Even now in his old age, he’s using a digital camera which he uses to compile what he calls “The Weekly Blather,” a newsletter of sorts, containing his photos, newspaper clippings and a two-page typed letter about the comings and goings in the family.

He sends it to about 30 people (friends and family) — it’s something he’s done for almost 35 years now.
In addition to “The Weekly Blather,” now we are also getting morning emails with a small tidbit about what him and “Barbie” (his nickname for my grandmother, Barbara) are doing along with any photos he has deemed interesting.
He is an incredible man, father and grandfather. I will be devastated when he passes. ~shared by @robchronphotography

To The Wonder of Old Photos and Childhood Memories

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on To The Wonder of Old Photos and Childhood Memories

To the wonder of old pictures, childhood memory, and family legacy.

That’s my Grandpa on the left and his brother, Dickie, on the right.

This photo was taken when they were little boys growing up in Toledo, Ohio.

When my grandfather was a little boy, he used to sit in front of the radio and listen to Bing Crosby and sing. So, he was given the nickname “Bing.” On the back of this photo, in faded ink, someone jotted this note: “Bing and Dick on our ‘ole Chevrolet.” ~shared by @allyinsac

Family Photos are Magic Mirrors

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Family Photos are Magic Mirrors

“Family faces are magic mirrors. Looking at people who belong to us, we see the past, present and future.” -Gail Lumet Buckley

My beautiful mother, Patricia, in 1968. She was just 24, and was photographed by her new beaux, my father, on his flashy Triumph Spitfire in Dublin, Ireland.

I love the sparkle in her eyes; she was so happy and in love.

Later, she mothered three girls, all of whom she was very proud.

Sadly, she passed away suddenly when I was just 30 years old. She was just 63. I thought I was all grown up until I lost her.

Sometimes I catch a fleeting glance of her in the mirror and realize she’s still with me. ~shared by @lostandfoundimages

The Queen of Family Photos

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on The Queen of Family Photos

Their adventures are your adventures. Their images inspire your imagination.

Here are my grandparents, Joe and Marge Nowaki, at a carnival in 1949, just before they were married.

They had 5 children – 4 girls and 1 boy. Over their lifetimes, they had 13 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

I remember how much they loved to travel and dance. They were great dancers; Gran loved Elvis especially.

She used to hide candy for us grandchildren to find. And she was an avid traveler her entire life, right up until the end. Even when she had dementia, she thought she was on vacation!

Gran just passed away this month and will be greatly missed. She was the Queen of our family. ~shared by @jesstea1

Photos Bridge the Present with the Past

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Photos Bridge the Present with the Past

These static images have the uncanny ability to jar the memory and bring places and people back to life. They bridge the present with the past. ~Isabel Lopez

This is my beautiful grandmother on Easter Day, 1961. She was only 43 years old when this photo was taken. She didn’t try to hide the gray in her hair; she was a classic beauty.
My grandfather sold Buicks so they always had a new one, just like this.
My memory of my grandmother is that she was an artistic person, very much a creative spirit. In fact, I still have a lot of her paintings hanging in my own house today. ~shared by @threecees704

Tales to Tell, Through Family Photos

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Tales to Tell, Through Family Photos

We all have tales to tell. The old photos help us remember where to begin.

Here’s my grandmother, Doris Kerscher Mueller, at age 4, with her parents, uncle and aunt in Munich in 1938.

Her parents, Isidor and Dora Kerscher (next to Doris), were originally from small towns in Bavaria, Germany.

They immigrated to the US when they were only 18 years old, and settled in Milwaukee, eventually purchasing a tavern, hall and bowling alley in New Holstein, WI, during Prohibition.

Yesterday was my grandmother Doris’ 80th birthday. Check out that fierce hood!

Happy birthday grandma. Cheers to memories…and the weekend! ~shared by @kellicohen
