A Woman Named “Joe”

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on A Woman Named “Joe”

This is my grandmother, Joe Renee Shuffield Niesen. She was named after her father, who I think wished she had been a boy.
He kind of got his wish. In 1938 she was 18 and tenacious. She convinced the men’s military marching band in Little Rock, Arkansas to let her audition.

She was so good they made her the soloist. As the band toured throughout the Midwest, she got her own private hotel room, along
with a chaperone. ~ shared by @andrewniesen

Kodachrome
You give us those nice bright colors,
You give us the greens of summers,
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah!
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So Mama, don’t take my Kodachrome away.

A Heart Full of Family Photos

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on A Heart Full of Family Photos

Mom and Dad in Venezuela.
This is the most beautiful photo I have of them. It means a lot to me since it reminds me that no matter how many things you have to go through, you have to fight with all your heart to keep love alive and your family strong.
They’re still together after 42 years. My Mom got married when she was only 18, to follow my Dad, who was training with the US Army in Virginia. They still live in Venezuela today.
Miss them. ~ shared by @marianbphoto

Found Family Photo Album

Dad.
Now, if only I could have half the heart he has, I’d be ok.

This photo was shot about 25 years ago. I found it in an old family photo album on a trip to visit my parents. Until I was an adult, I didn’t really appreciate all that my father has been through. He had a rough upbringing and did his best to ensure it was different for us. It was…and for that, I am deeply grateful. ~ shared by @matthewdejesus

How I met your mother

This is my Mom & Dad with my Nana. This is the first day my Mom met her soon-to-be in-laws. My Mother always talks about how welcomed she felt on this day; she could just feel the love all around. My Nana was the most special person. Seattle. 1980. @shuangel ~ shared by @missmariss

Vintage Wedding Photos

My grandparents, Joseph Alcide LaCour and Sarah Lincoln LaCour, on their wedding day in Mississippi in 1946. They were married shortly after WWII and my father was born a few years later.

Today, we give thanks for the Veterans who sacrificed for us. Many gave their lives, and many returned home to start new families. They left a legacy that lives on today in us. ~ shared by @rachellacour

Flooded with Memories

We found this photo in the wake of my grandfather’s death, of my uncle and mother atop my grandparents’ shoulders. It flooded me with memories of how much they imparted. An artist, musician, ad man and outdoor lover – I see my grandfather mirrored in me and in that way he’ll always be with me. ~ shared by @davidwalterbanks

Family Fun, from Maine to Miami

Posted by | · · · · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on Family Fun, from Maine to Miami

From Maine to Miami, 2004.
My kids, Lucy and Rufus, having fun. It was spring break and we were getting out of snowy Maine for a week.
We got Joe’s Stone Crab takeout because 3 year olds don’t do restaurants so well. There was no iPhone, so I shot this with a Holga. ~ shared by @russellkaye

How Many Old Family Photos are Buried in Boxes?

Posted by | · · · · · · | Featured Family Stories | No Comments on How Many Old Family Photos are Buried in Boxes?

Something caught my eye in a flea market in Germany last week. This little family, gazing at me from a box filled with dusty family photos. There were thousands like this.

How many of our most important family memories are collecting dust, hidden away in shoeboxes (or Dropbox)? Once the folks in them are gone, the images are anonymous. Mysteries.

How are you discovering them, sharing them and preserving them? ~ shared by @rachellacour
